An attempt was made to prove, whether patients with hypochondriasis and eating disorders behave differently from each other as concerns personality traits and the personality traits in question differ between healthy and ill persons. The Eysenck Personality Inventory was given to patients with hypochondriasis (n = 7), anorexia (n = 20) and bulimia (n = 12). The Illness Attitude Questionnaire and different parameters of self-rating and objective tests of anxiety and depression were applied to the patients. Standardised questionnaires (Emotionality-Activity-Sleeping Questionnaire) were used for the estimation of anxiety and depression. Patients with anorexia showed a higher degree of anxiety and depression than the patients with hypochondriasis. A correlation between decreased control of eating and low self-esteem was observed in both groups. The examination of eating disorders as syndromes of depression led to the assumption that there is a tendency for anorexia nervosa to spread rapidly, as far as the stabilisation and improvement of the clinical picture are concerned, as well as the assumption that an important factor in the aetiology of these syndromes is a change in life style. A correlation was found between personality traits in hypochondriasis and eating disorders. The examination of personality characteristics of the patients with anorexia nervosa and hypochondriasis showed that the anorexia patients have a higher degree of social desirability than the hypochondriasis group. An individual analysis of the personality characteristics of the patients showed that hypochondriasis and anorexia are not identical.NHL and the NHL Shield are registered trademarks and NHL Mobile name and logo, NHL GameCenter and Unlimited NHL are trademarks of the National Hockey League.
