Advantages of using dummy variables for a regression

I ran a regression and the coefficient turned out to be negative. I checked this with a linear regression (i.e. using ‘y’ instead of ‘X’). The coefficient turned out to be positive.
What should I conclude?


The coefficient is positive or negative depending on how the variable is coded.
Consider the simple case of a two variable regression where $X$ is coded as -1, 1 and $Y$ as -1, 1. This is actually how I have done many regressions in the past.
If your intention is to find the influence of $X$ on $Y$ you should set the coefficients for $X$ and $Y$ to be 1 and -1 respectively. Otherwise, when you present $X$ as an explanatory variable the coefficient is simply the change in $Y$ for a unit change in $X$
If you want to find the influence of $Y$ on $X$ then the direction of the coefficient is irrelevant (i.e. if you set $Y$ to be -1, 1 and $X$ to be 1, -1 then you will get the same coefficients for $X$ and $Y$)
